Every expense in Penzum — whether you enter it manually or it arrives via a bank import — belongs to a category. Categories are the backbone of your financial overview: they group your spending into recognisable buckets, power the charts on your dashboard, and make it easy to explain your costs at a glance (or to your accountant).

Available categories

Penzum provides a fixed set of business-relevant categories that cover the most common sole-trader expenses. You don’t need to create or name anything yourself — just pick the one that fits.
CategoryTypical examples
Office supplies & printingPaper, toner cartridges, stationery, binding supplies
IT & computersLaptop, desktop, monitor, software licences, SaaS subscriptions
Phone & internetMobile plan, broadband connection, VoIP service
VehicleFuel, parking fees, car service, tyres
Travel & accommodationTrain tickets, flights, taxi, hotel stays
Marketing & advertisingOnline ads, print materials, website costs, graphic design
Accountant & consultantAccountancy fees, legal advice, business consultancy
Bank & financial feesAccount maintenance charges, per-transaction fees, card fees
Other business expenseAny legitimate business cost that does not fit a specific category above
The Other business expense category is a valid catch-all — use it freely. If you find yourself using it for the same type of cost repeatedly, that is a signal worth noting for your own records or discussing with your accountant.

Changing a category

Choosing the wrong category is not a problem — you can correct it at any time without losing any data.
1

Find the expense

Go to Expenses (for manually entered records) or Bank (for imported transactions) and locate the row you want to update.
2

Open the expense detail

Click anywhere on the expense row. The detail panel opens on the right side of the screen.
3

Select a new category

Click the current category label, then choose the correct category from the dropdown list.
4

Confirm

The change saves instantly. Your dashboard totals and reports update automatically to reflect the new categorisation.
After you import a batch of bank transactions, do a quick pass through the Bank section to review the default categories. Reassigning a handful of rows takes only a minute and makes your monthly reports far more useful.

How categories affect your reports

Dashboard charts, monthly summaries, and any exports group your spending by category. The more accurately you categorise your expenses, the more useful these views become — both for your own planning and for preparing materials for your accountant at tax time.
Penzum does not validate whether a category matches Hungarian tax rules for deductibility. Always confirm the correct tax treatment of a specific expense with a qualified accountant.
